The Gulmohar Sports-cum-Community Centre has its own history. This was on March 7, 1982, that a Sponsoring Committee for the Centre was set up with three representatives from each of the four parent housing societies viz. Delhi Union of Journalists Co-op. House Building Society Ltd., Times of India Officers’ Cooperative Housing Society Ltd., PTI Employees Cooperative House Building Society Ltd. And Press Association Cooperative Housing Society Ltd. When the Centre approached the DDA for allotment of land, the DDA made it mandatory that only the four societies were entitled to take allotment at a nominal price. The DDA wrote that the club land “shall exclusively vest jointly with the Gulmohar Housing Coops (though) the job of construction, development, control, finance and management of the premises shall be undertaken by the Centre as per the rules/regulations and Memorandum of Association of the Centre. So the DDA leased the one acre land to the four societies, and the Sponsoring Committee entrusted to the Centre, the job of building the club/centre. So also, the DDA accepted the four housing societies’ request fort allotment of the adjoining three acre land for playing grounds.
The Club was inaugurated by then Vice-President of India, Shri. R. Venkataraman on October 5th, 1986. Having developed the basic infra structure over a span of ten years, the Centre decided to take up one of the very big projects in their hands, the constructions of a Swimming Pool for its members. The Swimming was inaugurated by then Vice-President of India, Shri. Krishankant on May 9th, 1998.
In course of time, the Centre/Club has come up as one of the leading Recreation Centres in the neighborhood with a high tech AC Gym, swimming pool, card room and a bar. In the adjoining three acre plot, there is a children’s corner, jogging track, tennis and basketball courts, practice cricket pitches, turf cricket ground, football field where various sports activities are held all year long.
The Club Constitution provides for representation of four societies in the Club Committee as the societies are the owners of land on which the main building of the Club and playing field have been laid.
